11.10.2011It Doesn't Get Any More Personal Than This Folks! For years, self-proclaimed master block-printer, Jill K. in LA has created ready-made greeting cards and art prints, but THIS TIME, IT’S PERSONAL. She is now offering personalized handmade goods including: monogrammed stationery and custom full-figure NUDE PORTRAITURE especially for our latest pop-up shop. Texting pics of your naughty bits is so “passé” and often detrimental to your reputation, career, and your mother’s mental health. Tastefully show the target of your affection just how sexy, and classy, you are with a fine nude portrait professionally crafted by the one and only, Jill K. in LA. About the Technique: Starting with a photograph, from your supply, Jill K. will carve an individual block for each color within the composition. Each block is then inked and put to paper, by hand, resulting in a colorful vibrant image. Every piece is printed on hand-torn cotton paper. And since it’s a print, you may commission multiples!" DETAILS: *price for first print $100 *price for additional prints $10 each *features only ONE subject *includes up to 4 separate colors *print size approx. 4”x6” *paper size 6”x8” *printed with nontoxic ink on acid-free, archival cotton paper *each print is an ORIGINAL block print *delivered unframed P.S..... If you're a little too bashful, just submit a photo of yourself in lingerie or a bathing suit. Jill K. will then use her unbridled imagination to complete your nudey image. Please Note: The less skin you provide for the artist, the more freedom you grant her artistic license. So if you're still wondering what to get that special someone in your life who has absolutely everything....we think it's a pretty safe bet they don't have one of these! To order, call or stop by the shop (323) 906-8660 (photos can be delivered to the shop or emailed directly to the artist. 11.02.2011Sign Up Online For Workshops

Won't you join us next Wednesday evening, November 9th for a little lesson in coptic book binding with our dear friend Richenda Brim of Clementine Press? It's not every day you get the opportunity to learn such a skill from someone as talented in binding as Richenda. Here's all of the technical stuff on the class: The coptic structure is a non-adhesive exposed spine binding. It opens flat and makes a lovely journal or sketchbook for yourself or as a gift. Lecture and demonstration covers: supplies and suppliers prepping the text block sewing in the coptic style design considerations Students will leave class with one finished binding and step-by-step instructions. This is a pretty great opportunity to learn an ancient art and make a one-of-a-kind gift for the artist, writer or journal lover in your life. There are still some spaces left but not many so don't wait too long. If you can't make it next week we have added a second date, Wed. November 30th. Call the shop to sign up for either (323)906-8660. Class is from 7-10pm. Cost is $60 (plus $15 for materials). Sugar, Feathers And Two Australian Gals!
Finally... a post about the great time that was had at our sugar skull workshop last week. Our pal Jill K was feeling a bit under the weather but still managed to host super fun and informative class. After a quick lesson and demo by Jill, everyone was gung ho to get started decorating their own skulls. Icing, glitter, feathers and confetti were quickly put to good use as we got to work...

As you can see the creative juices were certainly flowing that night! You would think that everyone had been decorating sugar skulls for years with the incredible work they were turning out (we especially love the grill on the guy pictured above). Jill passed out rolo candies as treats and the wrappers were used to make the eyes (and teeth) on some of our skulls. The last 2 spots in the class went to these two gals who had just flown in from Australia and were passing through LA for a few days on their way to Oaxaca for a real deal Day Of The Dead party! Even jet lagged and on almost zero sleep they were the life of the party! Thanks again to Jill and to everyone who attended. We sure hope you had as much fun as we did! 10.25.2011Sugar Skulls (with brains) Workshop

Our first class is with the lovely Miss Jill K in LA. (who is one of the participating artists in our latest pop-up, This Time It's Personal). On October 26th at 7pm she will be sharing her tips and techniques for making your very own sugar skulls and will even be divulging her secret for how to give them brains that rattle..ooohhhh! At only $20 plus $4 for materials, it's a real steal. You will take home a few sugar skulls that you've decorated yourself plus all of the recipes and info you will need for making plenty more at home. This is a fun, easy and affordable workshop, just in time for Day Of The Dead... We hosted a launch party for her book Chic and Simple Sewing, and she taught some classes here as well back when the how-to shop Home Ec. rented space from us. Her girly (but not saccharine) aesthetic is a lot of fun, and we were excited to hear that this hardworking gal is branching out from writing books and teaching to create her own line of sewing patterns. Producing a line of patterns is expensive, of course, so Christine is looking for a bit of help raising some funds to help kickstart this project...via Kickstarter, naturally enough! We totally encourage you to check out the info page about her project to find out more about the patterns she will be offering, and to see the full list of cool premiums she's offering in exchange for donating to her fundraising efforts. You can get custom-made fabric buttons, pillows, dresses, and copies of the sewing patterns she's producing. Pretty darn cool if you ask us—and having seen firsthand Christine's attention to detail and sense of style, it's a given that these patterns will be easy to use and fun to sew. Here's a video where Christine tells you more, and here's a link to her Kickstarter page where you can make a donation. 8.19.2011Love Letter Day0 Comments8.18.2011Scenes from Sirocco1 Comments8.03.2011SNEAK PEEK: Sirocco Research Labs
